It was Saturday night a week ago that  as I was reading my bible and praying the Lord brought two truths to my spirit. I did not deliver this message last Sunday morning because the Lord was not done churning it in my spirit. The message had not had time to age in my heart for me to deliver in the fullness of what God had to share with both you and myself.

Yesterday we had a wonderful Joy in Bloom outreach event here at Joy. I was so thankful for all the members of Joy who prepared for the event, setup, participated in the event and helped to take down and pack up after the event.

I got a chance to speak with some families that came for the 1st time to Joy yesterday. We also had children from the neighborhood come on their bicycles to the event. And my heart was so full of Joy to hear that several of the Joy Fellowship Children remark that it was the greatest day of their lives!

All day long, we lifted up Jesus and showed his love to each other, our children and the guest who came. For that, I say Mission Accomplished!

Nelson and Ashley Joaquin and Family brought Lucy the Donkey and her baby donkey Flowers. They also brought sheep, and these puppys that looked like little polar bear cubs.

When Lucy and Flowers got here, Lucy walked out of the trailer and into the pen we had setup for her very gently. Flowers the 9 month old Donkey planted her feet outside the pen and was not going in. It took some gentle nudging as a first attempt by Genesis and Bethany. Followed by the static walking in a circle away from the pen and then back towards the pen. I even tried to help at one point due to my reputation as a chicken whisperer but apparently Flower does not speak poultry and my efforts fell short. Eventually when Flower decided it was okay in her mind to enter the pin she walked in and began to eat the wonderful clover and grass. Remembering this event the Lord brought to my heart that this is exactly how many of us are standing outside of the open door that God has for us to walk into. We see our family members who have walked before us, but we are not sure if we walk to enter in so what do we do? We dig in our feet and when we are trying to be directed in we stagger to the left or to the right. The Lord brought to my mind the imagery in the way Paul described Abraham walking in faith through the door God opened for him and Not Staggering at the Promise of God. Look at Romans 4:20

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

Let’s back up and read this verse in context beginning with verse Romans 4:16

    Romans 4:16-25

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

****This morning as we spend time in God’s word together I want you to allow the Holy Spirit to show you the open door that God has prepared for you and I want to you by faith walk into the door and embrace the truth and promise God has for you.

Last week I finished hearing the book of Jeremiah. The bible says in Romans 10:17

Romans 10:17

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

I prefer to listen to God’s word with my ears and see it in my minds eye rather than to read it with my eyes. There are many great apps to listen to God’s word. I just go to Biblegateway.com and I can both read and listen.

But as I mentioned early last Saturday night the Lord brought this scripture to my mind from Jeremiah 8:22

22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Lord brought to my mind was the Balm of Gliead. I remember years ago hearing a bible teacher speak about the importance of Balm to the people in the bible times and even today for those who are out in this world without access to clean water and soap and basic medical care.

You may remember from your time in school that the largest organ of your body is actually your skin.

Here is a summary from a article published in the National Library of Medicine:

Skin is the largest organ in the body and covers the body's entire external surface. It is made up of three layers, the epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis, all three of which vary significantly in their anatomy and function. The skin's structure is made up of an intricate network which serves as the body’s initial barrier against pathogens, UV light, and chemicals, and mechanical injury. It also regulates temperature and the amount of water released into the environment.

Damage to the skin either mechanically by tearing, scratching or burning puts a person and risk of infection as pathogens seek to invade the body and multiply and steal nutrition and resources from the body.

A simple scratch from a thorn bush, slip on a sharp stone or puncture by a fish’s fin could lead to death for the person who was without ability to clean and protect the area of injury. The reason it could lead to Death is that unless that area was cleaned and protected the bacteria and germs of the environment could enter the body through the opening in the skin and cause infection.

But before we go too much further I do not want to skip the opportunity to discuss the spiritual example we see in our natural skin design. Three layers, the epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis

First Lets talk about the Epidermis. This is the outside layer. This is what the world sees and this is how we make contact with our environment.

What does the epidermis (top layer of skin) do?

Your epidermis is the top layer of the skin that you can see and touch. Keratin, a protein inside skin cells, makes up the skin cells and, along with other proteins, sticks together to form this layer. The epidermis:

    • Acts as a protective barrier: The epidermis keeps bacteria and germs from entering your body and bloodstream and causing infections. It also protects against rain, sun and other elements.
    • Makes new skin: The epidermis continually makes new skin cells. These new cells replace the approximately 40,000 old skin cells that your body sheds every day. You have new skin every 30 days.
    • Protects your body: Langerhans cells in the epidermis are part of the body’s immune system. They help fight off germs and infections.
    • Provides skin color: The epidermis contains melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. The amount of melanin you have determines the color of your skin, hair and eyes. People who make more melanin have darker skin and may tan more quickly.
    • TOOLS
    • And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
    • TOOLS
    • And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
    • TOOLS
  • And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

I love the song we sing on Sunday Morning about filling our life from inside until all people see on the outside is Jesus. The outside of the Skin is what people see but it is only because of what is on the inside.

Matthew 23:27

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

***You can put paint on the outside but eventually what is in on the inside is going to show through.

That leads us to the next layer:

What does the dermis (middle layer of skin) do?

The dermis makes up 90% of skin’s thickness. This middle layer of skin:

  • Has collagen and elastin: Collagen is a protein that makes skin cells strong and resilient. Another protein found in the dermis, elastin, keeps skin flexible. It also helps stretched skin regain its shape.
  • Grows hair: The roots of hair follicles attach to the dermis.
  • Keeps you in touch: Nerves in the dermis tell you when something is too hot to touch, itchy or super soft. These nerve receptors also help you feel pain.
  • Makes oil: Oil glands in the dermis help keep the skin soft and smooth. Oil also prevents your skin from absorbing too much water when you swim or get caught in a rainstorm.
  • Produces sweat: Sweat glands in the dermis release sweat through skin pores. Sweat helps regulate your body temperature.
  • Supplies blood: Blood vessels in the dermis provide nutrients to the epidermis, keeping the skin layers healthy.
  •

***Comparing the 3 layers of Skin to our beings made in the image and likeness of God. (Body, Soul and Spirit)

I would like for you to consider the Epidermis as the Body. It is what people see and it is how we touch and can be touched in our environment. It is how what is happening inside is expressed and presented to the world.

The inside is the Dermis: This is like our Soul, This is where we existing as the individual that God created. Unique and special. This is where we feel hurt, this is where we experience love. This is where we make oil and sweat which are expressed out through our body. This is one area where infection can take place. Where things can fester and become unhealthy and uncomfortable.

Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

2 Corinthians 4:7

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

***The third layer of skin the most deep is the hypodermis. It is compared to our spirit that is given us by God.

What does the hypodermis (bottom layer of skin) do?

The bottom layer of skin, or hypodermis, is the fatty layer. The hypodermis:

  • Cushions muscles and bones: Fat in the hypodermis protects muscles and bones from injuries when you fall or are in an accident.
  • Has connective tissue: This tissue connects layers of skin to muscles and bones.
  • Helps the nerves and blood vessels: Nerves and blood vessels in the dermis (middle layer) get larger in the hypodermis. These nerves and blood vessels branch out to connect the hypodermis to the rest of the body.
  • Regulates body temperature: Fat in the hypodermis keeps you from getting too cold or hot.
  • Proverbs 20:27

  • 27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.
  • Ecclesiastes 12:6-7

  • Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
  • Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

  • 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
  • 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

***Returning to our key verse:  Jeremiah 8:22

22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

What is Balm?

A balm is an aromatic, medicinal substance derived from plants. Gilead was an area east of the Jordan River, well known for its spices and ointments. The "balm of Gilead" was, therefore, a high-quality ointment with healing properties. The balm was made from resin taken from a flowering plant in the Middle East, although the exact species is unknown. It was also called the “balsam of Mecca

For full context of this passage today lets begin with Jeremiah 8:18-22

Jeremiah 8:18-22

18 When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

19 Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the Lord in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

20 The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.

22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

***The first point of the Message this morning: The balm must be applied in order to bring healing and health.

Jeremiah asked this question in verse 19: Is the Lord not in Zion? Is not her king in her? Why have they provoked God to anger with graven images and with strange gods.  Again in verse 22 he asked: is there no balm in Gliead? Is there no physician there? Why then is the health of my people not recovered.

My friends I want to bring home Jeremiah’s question: Yes Jeremiah the Lord was in Hopewell even in Joy Fellowship Church today! Yes Jeremiah God’s people continue to serve other gods!

Yes Jeremiah The healer is here because the Healer is Jesus and he said Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Yes Jeremiah The healer is here! Yes Jeremiah there is balm in Hopewell, The blood of Jesus and the anointing of the Holy Ghost! The reason many of God’s people are not recovered is because they do not allow the balm to be applied to their lives.

***I want you to ask yourself this question this morning……What are you currently dealing with in your life, what open wound are you walking around with that is exposed to all the germs of life that you are not allowing the Balm of healing, The great physician Jesus to apply to your life.

Many times as a child I would not want any medical care for an injury because the care needed normally involved some pain in order to clean in order to protect;

Look at Luke 10 as Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan:

 Luke 10:33-34

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

**The wine was used for cleaning as it contained alcohol, which kills bacteria and germs. The oil was the Balm of protection, the barrier to prevent invasion of pathogens into the dermis.

My friends do not carry around an open wound. Let the Holy Spirit pour in the Oil and the Wine. Let God cleanse the wound and the protect the wound in order to bring healing in your life.

Later in the book of Jeremiah Chapter 46 God is giving Jeremiah a prophecy about the coming failure of Egypt to defend themselves or anyone against the incoming forces of Babylon. You see God’s people thought they could rely on the strength of the Egyptians to keep them out of the coming captivity which was God’s judgement but it was also his preservation of them. But I want you see what God had Jeremiah prophecy in verse 11 of Jeremiah 46:11-13

 Jeremiah 46:11-13

11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.

12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.

13 The word that the Lord spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

***The first point of the Message this morning: The balm must be applied in order to bring healing and health.

In verse 11 we see point #2 of the Message today: The balm must be applied in God’s timing in order to bring Healing

*** I want to remind you what God spoke through the prophet Isaiah 55:6 about God’s timing.

Isaiah 55

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.

Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

***Jesus in his last visit to Jerusalem before going to the cross cries over the city and the people because he sees they are missing their window of opportunity.

Luke 19:41-44

41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

***Balm applied to quickly without cleaning the wound first will lead to infection.***Balm applied too late after pathogens have already entered will trap in the infection.

Point #2 of the Message today: The balm must be applied in God’s timing in order to bring Healing

****I want to take you back to the visualization of the skin that has been cut in some way and pathogens are trying to enter the body. The place on the skin will be red, swollen and begin to rise. It will have heat and sensitivity as there is a internal battle raging. The body sends the white corpuscles they are attacking the infection. The pathogen is multiplying and at some point, it becomes too concentrated. It becomes too much for the body to handle from the inside and outside intervention is needed. This is when just applying the balm on the outside no matter how good the balm is it cannot bring healing until there is first a release of the pus, the dead byproducts of the battle raging within.

I want you to see this metaphoric imagery of God, the great physician cutting in order to bring healing. Look at Hosea chapter 6

Hosea 6:1-3

Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

***The first point of the Message this morning: The balm must be applied in order to bring healing and health.

***Point #2 of the Message today: The balm must be applied in God’s timing in order to bring Healing

***Point #3 of the Message today: Unforgiveness = Sickness! We must allow the Holy Spirit to release hurts of past in order for healing to come.

****I am going to finish this message tonight at Bilingual Service. We are going to speak about Balm being used for more that just healing of wounds but actually for preparation for ministry.

But in Closing this morning I want to take you back to Matthew Chapter 6 when Jesus was teaching the Disciples to pray:

***Listen to the words of the Jesus again:

Matthew 6:5-15

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 5:21-24

21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

****I want to pivot the message at this point to another thought the Lord brought to my heart this morning about another use of Balm than just for healing. Balm was also used in the preparation of a queen to be selected by a king or bride to be married to her husband.

You see the different balms prepared from different spices, herbs and leaves that were crushed and distilled, gave off wonderful scents and odors. Listen to how the process was explained in Esther Chapter 2:12

Esther 2:12

12 Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

***Point #2 of the Message today: The balm must be applied in God’s timing in order to bring Healing

***Point #3 of the Message today: Unforgiveness = Sickness! We must allow the Holy Spirit to release hurts of past in order for healing to come.

***The 4th Point of the Message today: God is preparing us to be the Bride of Christ and it is a process.

2 Corinthians 11:2

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Ephesians 5:25-28

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Revelation 19:1-9

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.

And again they said, Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

2 Corinthians 2:14-17

14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, G2368 that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

Revelation 5

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
